The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who took the championship lead from his teammate by just one point after his victory in Mexico City recently, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Until that point, Piastri had been the fastest McLaren driver for most of the session before sprint qualifying scheduled for 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, trailing 36 points Norris, was classified in P17 as his team opted for a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, though minor, when he lost control at the fourth corner soon after starting. The Japanese slid over the exit kerbs before rotating through the gravel trap, and was lucky to avoid just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also had a spin, at the final moments of the practice, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the main straight. Hamilton finished practice in 19th place, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with the German's Sauber in third, 0.619secs slower than the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
