At least six individuals have died amid a crowd crush at a military recruitment gathering held in a stadium in the West African nation.

The midweek "devastating" event appeared to have been caused by "a sudden rush of candidates who breached security protocols and rushed into the entrances," stated a statement from the nation's military.

22 additional individuals were injured, including five who are in serious state.

Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.

Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally attract massive gatherings and frequently lead to chaotic scenes.

The deadline to submit applications for this recruitment was extended by a week to accommodate more applicants, as some had experienced challenges in the process.
