A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump stated on Saturday that the president had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
